This failed 1912 Democratic vice presidential nominee was a New York representative (1911-13), best known as the very first U.S. Secretary of Commerce (1913-19, under Wilson). Addressed to Albert Johannsen, a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (1950), the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I am interested in your professorship of petrology, remembering that in Washington we had to appoint a scientist of a type new to me whom I think was called a petrographer.
