Autograph Note Signed. Lafayette Sabine FOSTER.

Autograph Note Signed.

This Connecticut politician and newspaper editor served as U.S. senator from 1855 to 1867, and as president pro tempore of the Senate in 1865 would have been next in line for the presidency had conspirator George Atzerodt assassinated Vice President Andrew Johnson as was intended; later Connecticut Supreme Court justice (1870-76). ANS, 1p, 6½" X 8", Norwich, CT, 1853 July 23. Addressed to G.L. Ford, president of "N.L.W. & P.R.L. Co.," presumably a railroad line. Near fine. Routine content regarding this firm for whom Foster apparently handled certain business matters: "Mr. John P. Johnson of Franklin has handed me a small bill for building wall & c. for your company -- Is there any objection to paying it?" Boldly signed, the whole penned in brown ink in Foster's usual hurried scrawl. Item #28761
