Document Signed. Harry M. LYDENBERG.

Document Signed.

This bibliographical giant, president of the American Library Association and the Bibliographical Society of America, was a fixture at the New York Public Library, serving as manager of the manuscript division, chief reference librarian, assistant director and finally director (1934-41); among his many books is "The History of the New York Public Library" (1923). Partly-printed DS, 1p, 5½" X 8½", New York, NY, 1940 June 24. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "New York Public Library" letterhead, this form letter (partly typed in) acknowledges and thanks a book gift to the library -- in this case Gates' privately published booklet "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge." Lydenberg's miniscule signature could easily be mistaken for printed, but is actually authentic and original. Item #28424
