Item #28339 Typed Letter Signed. Marion B. FOLSOM.

Typed Letter Signed.

This long-time Eastman Kodak executive helped draft the original Social Security Act in 1934; in 1955 he succeeded the first secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Oveta Culp Hobby, serving until 1958. TLS, 1p, 6½" X 9", Washington, DC, 1955 August 26. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). Near fine. Apparently Gates had heard that Folsom was a Civil War buff and had sent him literature of the Civil War Round Table of New York, of which he was an officer. Folsom thanks him, adding: "Someone has just given me a copy of the 'Decisive Battles of the Civil War,' and it is an excellent book. The maps are the best I have seen. I hope to get a chance this fall to go to the battle fields I have not yet covered, and this book will be quite helpful...." Nice full signature in blue fountain pen. Item #28339
