Signed Postal Cover.

Republican governor of Massachusetts (1961-63, 1966-69), who resigned to become Richard Nixon's secretary of transportation (1969-73); ambassador to Italy (1973-77). Signed Postal Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Portage, Indiana, on 17 July 1970. Fine. Single 4-cent "St. Lawrence Seaway" stamp, 6-cent "Daniel Webster" stamp and 5-cent "Indiana Sesquicentennial 1816-1966" stamp at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Volpe signs near the "sweet spot," large and bold, in black fineline. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present. Volpe attended the opening of the "Port of Indiana" in Portage on this date, and hence the relevance of his signature on this piece -- and of stamps honoring Indiana, maritime transportation and a Massachusetts favorite son.
