"Wayne King" Matchbook.

(KING, Wayne) (1901-85).

Known as "The Waltz King," this American bandleader made slow, dreamy waltzes popular during his heyday of the 1930s and '40s. Matchbook with facsimile "Wayne King" signature embossed in gold on the front cover (3" X 1 3/4"), 3" X 4½" (unfolded, with matches removed for safety's sake). Chicago: Universal Match Corp., n.y. (ca. 1950). Very good. Mild edgewear and light soiling; small staple holes from removal of matches. Glazed white card stock. "The Waltz King" imprinted in gold on spine ("saddle" to matchbook collectors) and "Wayne King / The Waltz King / Coming Soon to Play for You!" along with two music measures on back cover. Inside features King's portrait and a lengthy text titled "Pipe Talk from the Waltz King," his comments on the joys of pipe smoking, which he signs off (in facsimile) with "Pleasant Smoking." Obviously a commercial plug, though who he's the spokesman for is a mystery. Item #23329
