Three Discourses on the Religion of Reason.

New York: Ross & Tousey, 1859. Paperback. 8vo. Wrappers. 85pp. Very good. Light soiling and minor edgewear. Item #22239

First edition. Collection of three lectures delivered in Peterboro on 21 February 1858, 23 January 1859 and 19 June 1859, followed by Smith's letter to William Goodell of 13 August 1859 defending his beliefs from Goodell's criticisms. Chief among this noted abolitionist's beliefs, of course, is his attack against those who claim a Biblical sanction for slavery and a defense of the Biblical call for abolitionism. "Unchanged from Their Original Publication," the front wrapper states -- but neither this title nor the three essays which it compiles are in Dumond or Sabin. Uncommon.
