The colorful soldier and adventurer chronicled his exploits in such popular books as "Down the Great River" (1887, covering his 3,000-mile canoe voyage to locate the source of the Mississippi River), "Capture, Prison-Pen, and Escape" (1865, covering his experiences in Confederate prisons), "Three Years in the Federal Cavalry" (1870), "Battles for the Union" (1874) and "Heroes of Three Wars" (1878). Large signature clipped from the closing portion of a typed letter, 5" X 2", n.p., n.y. Blue typed "Very truly yours" and bold flamboyant signature. Very good. Slight partial age toning.
