This trombonist with the Les Brown and Jimmy Dorsey big bands had a hit in 1961 with "Up a Lazy River," which made the pop charts and earned him a Grammy Award; he formed a big band long after the big band heyday and created a sound "you could twist to" with versions of the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and other pop hits.
