This American Baptist educator authored numerous books ("The Spiritual Interpretation of History," "The Student's Gospel," "The Social Teaching of Jesus," etc.) and is remembered as leader of the Social Gospel movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. Handsome signature and date (28 June 1930) in black fountain pen near the top of a 5" X 4" slip, n.p. Near fine. Near the center a small magazine portrait of Mathews has been neatly affixed. This was signed by Mathews at a Chautauqua meeting where he spoke. Item #18454
