Fiction fans remember this Iowa novelist (actually a lawyer and bootlegger prosecutor) for exciting depictions of pioneer life in books such as "Vandemark's Folly" (1921) and "The Hawkeye" (1923), while steamboating aficionados remember him for the classic "Mississippi Steamboatin'."
