The Russian-born conductor (husband of soprano Lily Pons) led the Columbia Broadcasting Orchestra throughout the 1930s before moving on to the New York Philharmonic, which he led from 1952 to 1979; it was he who commissioned Aaron Copland to compose his famed "Lincoln Portrait"; his influence on the American public's classical music taste was vast.
