This American opera coloratura soprano's debut in 1926 at age 19 made her the youngest prima donna to premiere at the Metropolitan Opera (as gilda in Verdi's "Rigoletto"), and briefly made her the toast of the town -- heard on the radio and seen and heard in some of the first short sound films; but her decline was just as meteoric as her rise and her career fizzled and sputtered afterward.
