This Polish-born American theatrical photographer set up shop on Broadway in New York in the 1920s, and in the '30s developed a compelling portraiture style that made him sought after on the East coast. PS, heavy stock 5" X 7", n.p., n.y. Near fine. Undated (ca. 1935) head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired young women in typical Mitchell pose -- shoulders at left but facing rightward and head turned to the right. This subject has her hair parted in the middle and pulled tight; she gazes to her right (viewer's left) with the barest hint of a Mona Lisa smile. In the dark lower left corner, Mitchell signs boldly in his usual white ink, making for superb contrast. And in the light area at lower right the unidentified subject signs boldly in black grease pencil: "To Eddie / Tamara," also with superb contrast. While we haven't been able to identify the subject, she is most likely an actress or perhaps a ballet figure. "Tamara" suggests Russian, and Mitchell did photograph a number of Les Ballets Russes ballerinas. A lovely vintage piece signed by a premiere photographer.

This mysterious producer and impresario, whom Frank Sinatra called "The Genius," founded New York's famed Copacabana nightclub in 1940, supposedly a front for mobster Frank Costello, and by the late 1950s was producing resort shows in Las Vegas. Signed program booklet, small 4to (6" X 9"), New York, NY, 1848. 16pp. Very good. Schubert Theatre program for the short-lived musical comedy "Heaven on Earth." On the glossy front cover, which features a stylized sketch of a fashionable lady in evening gown and long white gloves, Proser signs boldly near the bottom in green ink. Near the top of the program, uncredited co-director JOHN MURRAY ANDERSON (1886-1954) signs in full in blue ink, adding "1948." And near the center three cast members also sign: star PETER LIND HAYES (1915-98), CLAUDE STROUD (1906-85) and DOROTHY JARNAC (1922-?) also sign in blue ink, and for good measure Hayes actress-singer wife MARY HEALY (born 1918) signs as well in green ink. One critic at the time noted that Proser, successful with the Copacabana and another musical, "had better hang onto that brace of entertainment bonanazas after the way his latest musical comedy... thudded onto Broadway Thursday evening." An unusual assemblage of signatures from this ill-fated production.

This innovative American artist, in addition to illustrating books, was instrumental in getting the U.S. Post Office to produce more colorful stamps and to utilize new lithography processes to allow that; among other stamps, he designed the 1962 "Mississippoi Riverboat" and "Boys Club of America" commemorative stamps, co-designed the 1963 Christmas commemorative stamp, the 1964 "Quilted" stamp, the 1965 "Discus Thrower" and "Portrait of Herbert Hoover" and the 1966 "Humane Treatment of Animals." Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in New London, Connecticut on 16 October 1967 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single $1 Todhunter-designed "Eugene O'Neill" stamp at upper right. Near fine. Blue "First Day Cover" encircling gilt Earth cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. At upper right, above the cancellation, Todhunter signs small and sloppy in black ink.

The second wife (married 1951) of the microbiologist who won the Nobel Prize in 1954 for cultivating polio viruses in tissue culture was, according to one biographer, "a constant source of support, participating socially and scientifically in the subsequent events of her husband's life." Printed color Christmas card, heavy stock 7¼" X 5" (closed), n.p., n.y. Near fine. Printed front cover depicts a watercolor New England fishing village scene, while inside panel bears a printed "Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" and "Doctor and Mrs. John F. Enders" printed in red. On the blank panel above this, she boldly pens "Warm greetings to you both / Carol and John Enders" in blue in. Although not noted, the recipient of this Christmas card was Basil O'Connor (1892-1972), FDR's well-known law partner. Interesting connection: The March of Dimes was founded by polio victim Franklin D. Roosevelt and O'Connor, and raised many millions to battle polio and vaccines such as Jonas Salk's -- hence it's appropriate there would have been cordial relations between the polio researcherEnders and polio crusader O'Connor. Unusual and interesting.

This English member of Parliament was also elected mayor of London in 1828. ALS, 1p, 7 3/4" X 10", Whitehall Place {London], 1831 January 31. Addressed to Edward Church. Very good. Lightly age toned, with mild edgewear, but overall bold and attractive. Writing to this noted solicitor, Thompson declines an invitation: "The important business which will engage the attention of Parliament on the 10th Feby will prevent me having the honor of dining with the friends of the London Dispensary on the occasion of the anniversary meeting...." Interesting, a blank portion at lower right bears a lightly-pencilled note in the hand of pioneering autograph dealer Charles Hamilton misidentifying this document as being in the hand of a different William Thompson ("(d. 1833) Irish economist; supported Robt Owen; wrote 'Distribution of Wealth").

Fascinating handwritten appraisal of an Irish solicitor's book collection, as penned by the Dublin auctioneer Andrew J. Keogh. Autograph Document Signed, 8" X 13" , 10pp (rectos only), Dublin, Ireland, n.y. [1912]. Very good. Single-punch at upper left with brass clasp; light age toning and hint of soiling to some leaves. Neatly and boldly penned in black ink, this listing of books is divided alphabetically into categories: "America," "Art & Archaeology," "English History & Biography," "European History," "English Literature," "French & Italian History, Literature Etc," "India & The East, History, Biographies Etc," "Ireland, Histories & Works relating to," "Miscellaneous" and "Religion, Church History Etc." It represents what you'd expect to find in an educated upper class barrister's "Gentleman's Library" -- classics, numerous multi-volume sets, etc. Given that this collection included a great many large multi-volume sets, this was indeed a sizeable library. Each line listing consists simply of author and title, number of volumes and year published, with no value attached to individual titles. At the conclusion Keogh writes, "I estimate the value of the library at the sum of Eighty Seven Pounds stg." and signs. Hand-lettered "title page" bears Keogh's oval inkstamped "Auctioneer & Vender" stamp. Jones Q. Pigot (1855-1912) was an Irish jurist and professor of jurisprudence who spent part of his career in India. A fascinating glimpse into a typical turn-of-the-century gentleman's library.

TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Volunteers of America letterhead, New York, NY, 1903 October 3. Addressed to the editor of the "New York Independent." Good. Faint ink transfer of text, minor soiling. Excellent content in which Booth tries to quell a rumor that the Volunteers have "Cut loose from the Churches"-- "Surely this, of all movements in existence, has shown the most friendly attitude as an interdenominational auxiliary to the Churches." Large, flamboyant signature.

Fascinating post-war (by one day!) letter from a Washingtonian, apparently a businessman. ALS, 4pp, 5" X 8", Washington, DC, 1865 April 11. Addressed to George May Powell. Fine. Among other matters, Conant discusses Washington on the day of surrender, April 10: "...You would have been surprised to see how some of the grave men and women behaved themselves here on its reception. But no wonder that right souls were lifted up by it. Like the cloud-liftings to the weatherbound mariner, it came as a boon from Heaven. We are undoubtedly on the eve of very great changes; and such as will afford opportunities for men of your Stamp to make a much better investment of their 'funded capital' than to remain in the employ of the Government...." Conant also discusses a business opportunity in the manufacture of prosthetic limbs and Powell's proposition for marketing a photo montage of Union leaders ("I do believe a fortune might be made in the prosecution of that Scheme. I should like to see it go forward, in the form of the most exquisite Mezzotint."). An exciting letter full of the exhilarating "mephitic atmosphere" (as Conant describes it) of post-war Washington.

Circular flute-edged paper state seal present and attractive at upper left; below this Strong signs, bold and nice. Governor Strong appoints Gibbins Adams a quartermaster in the second brigade and second division of the First Infantry Regiment of the state militia. Accompanied by an early, oval stipple-point engraved portrait of Strong. Despite flaws, a rather attractive and uncommon item.

ANS, 1p, 5¼" X 8", New York, NY, 1894 October 2. Addressed to Charles Aldrich. Very good. Erased but slightly visible pencil note across top margin; slight mounting trace on verso and on left margin. I'm 6 months behind in my mail! Forgive me! Paste this in & save yourself the Postage..." Accompanied by a second item which explains the first, a typed letter from a collector (dated 28 December 1973) asking if Wilson would sign a book for him; Wilson adds "O.K. Do Send it along" and signs this note. Wilson's signature is well known among philographers, for the bloated "l" in Earl contains a crazed smiley face. A fun pair.
